About the position
As a GIS Cadastral Mapping Technician at SAM, you will play a crucial role in transforming complex spatial data into actionable insights. Your primary responsibility will be to interpret various source documents, including as-built drawings, construction plans, engineering plans, recorded maps, deeds, legal descriptions, surveys, and highway right-of-way plans. You will utilize these documents to create and revise GIS maps using Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Desktop software. This position requires a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of the Public Land Survey System to ensure accuracy in mapping and data representation. In this role, you will maintain comprehensive base maps for assessment and other purposes, providing essential information regarding assessment maps, mapping processes, ownership history, and technical aspects of map preparation. You will also be responsible for identifying and reconciling legal descriptions, translating them into precise scale drawings of properties, and resolving discrepancies in title and property descriptions through thorough research and communication with the county Assessor. Responsibilities
- Interpret as-built drawings, construction plans, engineering plans, recorded maps, deeds, legal descriptions, surveys, and highway right-of-way plans to incorporate them into GIS.
- Revise existing Assessor GIS maps or create new ones using Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Desktop software.
- Maintain comprehensive base maps for assessment and other purposes.
- Provide information regarding assessment maps, mapping processes, ownership history, and technical aspects of assessment map preparation.
- Identify, reconcile, and translate legal descriptions into precise scale drawings of property.
- Interpolate between new maps and old maps to position changes accurately with adjoining parcels.
- Resolve discrepancies in title and property descriptions through research and communication with the county Assessor.
- Follow quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) processes, and perform routine data management tasks to ensure GIS data accuracy.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science or similar field is preferred but not required.
- 2-5 years working with cadastral data in an Esri GIS environment.
- Strong understanding of Public Land Survey System.
- Ability to read and interpret deeds, survey plats, and as-builts.
- Familiarity with Esri COGO tools.
- Knowledge of modern cartographic standards and principles.
- Advanced statistical, mathematical, and methodology skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
